Ethereum is closing in on a breakout above $2,000, propped up by record on-chain usage and a seasonal edge over Bitcoin. But CryptoQuant data suggests the recent move may be leaning on leveraged futures rather than spot buying, leaving the rally exposed if long-term holders stay on the sidelines.

Ethereum's move above $2,000 looks within reach, yet the signal that would confirm a durable breakout is still missing. Record network activity and a historically strong July have strengthened the bull case, but CryptoQuant noted that much of the recent price action appears driven by perpetual futures rather than sustained buying from long-term investors.

Fundamentals point higher

July has historically been one of Ethereum's strongest months, with an average return of over 10% according to CoinGlass. Bitcoin, by comparison, has averaged around 7% over the same period, giving ETH a clear seasonal edge.

On-chain data reinforces the setup. Ethereum's weekly transaction count has climbed to a record 18.7 million while median transaction fees have dropped to an all-time low of $0.008, per Token Terminal. Developer activity is rising too, with new smart contract deployments up around 192% and a further 57% jump over the past week.

Leverage is outpacing spot demand

CryptoQuant's latest report shows Ethereum's Perp Futures-to-spot Volume Gap on Binance remains elevated even as its Z-score cools, meaning leveraged activity is still outpacing spot demand. On Binance, net stablecoin inflows have jumped around 370%, topping $58 million in daily inflows.

Much of that fresh capital may be heading into futures rather than spot. Binance's funding rate has surged to 200% above its 90-day baseline, a sign that traders are increasingly reaching for leverage.

What the breakout still needs

Spot demand from long-term holders is still missing, which keeps the setup dependent on leveraged traders. Until spot buyers step in, the rally toward $2,000 could remain vulnerable to a leverage-driven pullback.
