Ethereum rose 3% to trade around $1,920 on Aug. 19, extending a recovery from $1,870 but stopping short of the $2,000 level. Momentum indicators favor buyers, but weak trend strength and liquidation clusters on both sides of the price keep the move inside a range rather than a confirmed breakout.
Ethereum builds momentum above $1,900
Ethereum traded at $1,919, after reaching an intraday high of $1,930 on Binance. The gain extended a recovery that began near $1,870 on Aug. 17, though buyers have not yet challenged the psychological $2,000 mark.
Buyers regained control after ETH spent several days moving sideways between roughly $1,875 and $1,900, then cleared that range on Aug. 17. The 4-hour RSI reached 61.02, above its 59.68 moving average and the neutral 50 level, staying below the overbought threshold of 70. The MACD line reached 7.69, above its 6.19 signal line, with the histogram at a positive 1.50, a narrow reading showing bullish momentum present but not accelerating sharply.
Daily chart puts $1,986 between ETH and $2,000
The daily chart places Ethereum just above the 0.618 Fibonacci retracement level at $1,872.84, drawn from the April high of $2,464.48 to the June low of $1,507.14. Holding above $1,873 keeps the 0.5 retracement at $1,985.81 in view, a level that sits just below $2,000 and forms a wider resistance zone.
However, trend strength remains the setup's main weakness: the daily average directional index stood at 15.41, well below the 20–25 range associated with an established trend. A decline below $1,873 would expose the July consolidation area near $1,800, with nearer support around $1,850.
Liquidation clusters surround Ethereum
CoinGlass' liquidation heatmap tracks where clusters of leveraged Ethereum positions sit above and below the current price. The three-day heatmap's brightest overhead band lies near $1,930, with additional liquidity extending through roughly $1,940 to $1,960. On the downside, a pocket sits near $1,900, followed by a broader, brighter concentration around $1,865 to $1,880.
Analysts eye Ethereum's next move
Crypto analyst Michaël van de Poppe said Ethereum had delivered a strong bounce against Bitcoin. According to van de Poppe: "we'll break up and get above 0.03205 in the coming weeks", and the rebound made his preferred area for opening an ETH/BTC long less likely. Pseudonymous analyst Julian said Ethereum had not yet established a clear direction, pointing to ETF demand, staking, Layer-2 activity, and on-chain use as factors that could support the asset if liquidity and risk appetite recover. He described a hold around $1,850 as constructive and a move back above $2,000 as a stronger signal that momentum is returning.
