Ethereum lacks a major catalyst of its own this week and is instead tracking swings in oil prices, Treasury yields and US-Iran diplomacy. A fresh Iranian offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days has revived some optimism, but the daily chart's $2,560 trendline remains the level that decides which way it breaks next.
Oil and Iran headlines drive the macro swing
No major idiosyncratic catalyst has hit Ethereum this week, so macro forces are setting the tone instead. A sharp drop in oil prices ahead of the UN General Assembly initially lifted crypto by easing inflation and rate hike concerns. That relief faded, however, after Donald Trump repeated that the US would only strike a deal with Tehran after the November elections, a remark that pushed oil prices, Treasury yields and the dollar back up and weighed on risk assets including Ethereum.
Sentiment turned again the following day. Iran has put an offer on the table promising to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the US meets its terms, and Iran's foreign minister Araghchi is staying in New York over the weekend to await a US response. A breakthrough would likely pare back aggressive rate hike bets on easing inflation concerns, a positive setup for Ethereum. A prolonged stalemate or renewed escalation, on the other hand, would likely keep the crypto market under pressure through tighter financial conditions.
Technicals point to $2,560 as the key trendline
On the daily chart, Ethereum has pulled back over the past few days as macro conditions turned negative, with a major upward trendline sitting near the $2,560 support. A bounce off that zone would open the door to a rally toward $3,000, while a break below it would expose the $2,360 level next.
The 4-hour chart shows bearish momentum building as sellers piled in on the break below that same upward trendline. On the 1-hour chart, a minor resistance zone near $2,710 is where sellers are likely to defend, while a break higher would open the way toward new highs.
No major data on today's calendar
There is nothing scheduled on today's economic calendar, so traders will keep watching for developments in the US-Iran talks following yesterday's Strait of Hormuz proposal.
