Ethereum will execute its "Glamsterdam" network upgrade in October, its biggest change since the 2022 Merge, combining faster block validation with a higher gas limit. The rollout lands as ETH holds above $2,600 after a volatile September rally supported in part by institutional ETF buying, even as some long-term holders take profits.

Ethereum will execute the "Glamsterdam" upgrade in October, expected to be its biggest update since the Merge shifted the network to proof-of-stake in 2022. The update combines "Amsterdam," which covers the execution layer that developers and users interact with, and "Gloas," which covers the proof-of-stake consensus layer that secures the network behind the scenes.

Faster blocks, cheaper transactions

Amsterdam adds parallel processing so Ethereum can execute multiple transactions at once instead of sequentially, and it adjusts storage pricing to ease network congestion. Gloas lets validators assemble blocks directly inside Ethereum's core protocol instead of routing through third-party relays, a change that shortens the block-propagation window from nine seconds to two seconds. Together, the changes break structural bottlenecks that had capped Ethereum's gas limit, letting the network raise that limit and cut transaction fees for developers and users.

ETH holds gains after a volatile September

The upgrade arrives with Ether still trading 45% below its all-time high. The token has held above $2,600 following a strong September recovery.

ETH gained about 32.6% in August. It then rose 6.7% on Sept. 18 to around $2,612. Another 4.9% gain on Sept. 21 pushed the price above $2,775. ETH briefly reached approximately $2,805 that day, its high for the month. By Sept. 29, ETH had pulled back to around $2,690, still roughly 11% above where September began.

Institutional buying meets profit-taking

Institutional demand has helped underpin the rally: BlackRock's spot Ethereum ETF products bought more than $1.5 billion worth of ETH over a 20-day period, according to Arkham Intelligence data. That lifted BlackRock's holdings to about 3.56 million ETH, worth about $8.69 billion, as of Sept. 17. At the same time, some long-term holders have moved to lock in gains: a wallet dormant for about nine years that originally bought 3,000 ETH at an average price of $18.80 in 2017 has sold 2,000 of those tokens at an average of about $3,096, generating approximately $6.19 million in proceeds.

Ethereum's structure has improved since its June lows, but the token still faces resistance around $2,700 to $2,800 that will decide whether September's recovery extends into a broader fourth-quarter advance.
