Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said interest rates affect almost everything, a remark the Motley Fool reads as a warning to AI stocks. Markets expect rate increases beginning in December, and rising bond yields could add pressure.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh voted with his Federal Open Market Committee colleagues on Oct. 28 to hold interest rates steady. His comments to the press afterward drew attention from AI stock investors.

The committee held rates despite a 67th consecutive month of annualized inflation above the Fed's long-term 2% target. Warsh took over as Fed chair on May 22 and has dropped forward-looking guidance from FOMC statements and press discussions.

Warsh flags rate sensitivity

In one of his more candid moments since succeeding Jerome Powell, Warsh addressed how rates reach AI companies. According to the Motley Fool, he said: "interest rates get in the cracks". He added that market participants are discriminating between investments and that credit spreads for certain assets have widened.

Some hyperscalers fund data center build-outs through stock issuances and cash on hand. Yet demand for AI hardware is being financed in part with debt, according to the article. If borrowing costs keep climbing, they could hurt that expansion and near-term growth projections.

Two fronts of rate pressure

The first front is the Fed itself. The CME Group's FedWatch Tool predicts a 72% chance of a 25-basis-point rate hike in December, and a nearly 50% chance of 75 basis points in cumulative hikes by Sept. 15, 2027.

Next comes the bond market. Notably higher 10- and 30-year Treasury yields can increase corporate borrowing costs. Elevated inflation is one reason long-duration yields have surged in 2026, but bond traders are also concerned about U.S. total debt surpassing $40 trillion and ongoing federal deficits.

Together, the article calls this combination of forces a potential disaster in the making for AI stocks.
