The FTSE 100 opened lower on 16 July, shedding 41 points as Experian, Relx and Compass led the decliners. Gains in Diploma, Weir and IMI cushioned the drop but failed to reverse it.

London's blue-chip index started the session in the red, falling 0.39% as it gave up 41 points at the open. The FTSE 100 shed 41 points as it slipped into the red.

Experian anchored the losses, dropping 5.06%. Relx followed with a decline of 2.26%, while Compass slipped 2.25%.

Not every constituent moved lower, however. Diploma led the gainers, rising 4.43%, with Weir up 2.08% and IMI up 1.53%. Those advances offset part of the fall but were not enough to lift the index back into positive territory at the open.
