Germany's jobless rate rose to 6.4% in July, its highest level since April 2026, as unemployment increased by more than economists had forecast. The German labour office attributed the rise mainly to seasonal factors, while noting the labour market's weak trend continues.

Germany's seasonally adjusted jobless rate climbed to 6.4% in July, up from 6.3% in June and matching the level last seen in April 2026 — itself the highest since July 2020. The reading points to some softness in the country's labour market this summer, according to Investinglive.

The ongoing Middle East conflict is adding to that uncertainty, Investinglive said. Economic conditions in Europe's largest economy have stayed benign at best since the start of the year, the outlet added.

Unemployment itself rose by 6,000 in July, more than the 5,000 increase economists had forecast, after a 1,000 decline the prior month. That left the total number of unemployed at roughly 2,993,000 people.

In unadjusted terms, the number of jobless ticked over the 3 million mark in July, Reuters reported. Daniel Terzenbach of Germany's labour office attributed the rise primarily to seasonal factors, adding that the labour market's weak trend persists: "Overall, the weak trend observed in the labour market over recent months is continuing."
