Gold Awaits Payrolls Test After Hawkish Fed Hold

The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady last week, but three FOMC members backed a 25-basis-point hike, keeping the central bank's tone hawkish. Gold traders now await this week's ISM, JOLTs, and Non-Farm Payrolls data to see whether that hawkish narrative holds, with the metal trading inside a defined weekly range.

The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged at last week's meeting, though three FOMC members voted for a 25-basis-point increase, reinforcing the central bank's hawkish tone. Now the focus shifts from Fed communication to this week's data: the ISM surveys, JOLTs Job Openings, and Friday's Non-Farm Payrolls report will shape expectations for interest rates, real yields, and the US dollar, the key drivers of gold's price behavior.

One Continuous Macro Narrative

Rather than trading each release in isolation, the market is treating this week's calendar as a single sequence, with each report adding another piece of information about the economy. By the time Friday's payrolls print lands, traders will already have built expectations from the week's earlier data. For experienced traders, what matters most is often not whether an individual report beats or misses forecasts, but whether the full sequence reinforces or challenges the market's existing view.

Two Scenarios for Real Yields and the Dollar

If ISM surveys stay firm and payrolls confirm continued labor-market strength, expectations for higher real yields and a resilient dollar could remain supported — a combination that has historically been less supportive for gold. But if the data instead points to softer business activity or weakening labor demand, markets may reassess Fed policy expectations, a shift that could reduce pressure from yields and the dollar and potentially create a more supportive backdrop for gold.

Markets also react to the gap between expectations and outcomes: a strong payrolls report could draw only a modest reaction if investors already priced it in, while a smaller-than-expected miss could hit harder if it shifts the broader narrative. Central bank purchases, geopolitical developments, and safe-haven demand can occasionally weaken or strengthen gold's usual relationship with yields and the dollar, particularly in periods of elevated uncertainty.

Resistance and Support Levels in Play

From an Auction Market Theory perspective, gold continues trading within a well-defined weekly balance area, with payrolls expected to be the week's main volatility catalyst. Traders are watching a potential resistance zone between $4,166 and $4,181, with a lower resistance band at $4,109 to $4,120. On the downside, support levels sit at $4,044 to $4,053 and $3,990 to $4,002.

Acceptance above the upper balance area after the data would signal buyers pushing value higher, while a quick fade back into the previous range would suggest the move reflected short-term positioning rather than a lasting shift in market conviction.
