Gold trades near $4,270, but the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) still sits roughly 22% below its 52-week high even after a 76.34% one-year gain. The gap points to a catch-up trade concentrated in junior miners, while investors seeking pure bullion exposure have a lower-cost physical alternative.

Miners Lag Even as Gold Hits Records

Gold trades near $4,270. GDX, the default vehicle for gold-mining equity exposure, remains about 22% below its 52-week high of $117.16. The fund has gained 76.34% over the past year, still trailing bullion's advance. GDX holds the major producers, with Newmont at 10.37%, Agnico Eagle at 10.12%, and Barrick at 6.01%, and its top 10 positions account for 56.30% of assets.

Senior Miners Underperform Bullion's Move

Gold is up roughly 27% year over year. GDX is only 23.03% higher year to date. That gain came even after a 40.26% gain over the last month and an 18.63% jump in a single week. Newmont, Barrick, and Agnico carry mature production profiles, dividend commitments, and hedging programs that weaken the pass-through from a higher gold price. As a result, the fund trades at a price-to-earnings ratio near 16 even with bullion at record levels, behaving more like a large-cap equity index than a leveraged bet on gold.

Junior Miners Offer the Sharper Leverage

The VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ) holds small- and mid-cap producers and near-term developers whose earnings scale more aggressively with each incremental dollar in the gold price. When a major-miner fund sits well below its peak while gold sits at records, that gap tends to compress through the more sensitive end of the mining universe first. Junior miners carry single-project risk, financing risk, and larger drawdowns when gold reverses, and holders should note that the 10-year Treasury yield sits at 4.70%, where a sharp move higher tends to pressure the mining complex, juniors first.

Physical Gold Remains the Cleaner Hedge

For investors who bought GDX as a hedge rather than a growth bet, the iShares Gold Trust Micro (GLDM) removes operational risk entirely and tracks bullion at a lower expense ratio than GDX. Shifting between funds inside a retirement account carries no immediate tax consequences, but in a taxable account, selling a fully appreciated position held less than a year triggers short-term rates, making partial rotations or new contributions the more common workaround.
