Google Cloud grew revenue 82% year-over-year in the second quarter, and CEO Thomas Kurian tied the jump to existing customers who keep spending past their commitments. He told CNBC those clients are laying out roughly 50% more than they had already pledged.
Google's cloud unit lifted revenue 82% year-over-year in the second quarter. Its chief pointed to one driver above the rest: customers who spend well beyond what they promised.
Thomas Kurian, who runs the segment, said existing customers are spending roughly 50% more than they have already committed to spend on Google's products. That pattern, he argued, is what pushed the quarter's growth.
Kurian told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday: "They're spending roughly 50% more than the commitment". He credited the unit's product range and its sales execution, and said the same strength shows up in both revenue and operating income growth.
