Alphabet unveiled Gemini 4 Argon on Wednesday, its most advanced AI model, aimed at coding, cybersecurity, and complex professional work. The rollout starts with select cybersecurity partners, and Wall Street read the launch as proof Google can still compete at the frontier against OpenAI and Anthropic.

Argon targets coding and cyber defense

Alphabet unveiled Gemini 4 Argon on Wednesday, calling it its most advanced AI model yet. The company said Argon sets a new record in real-world software engineering and ties for first in cybersecurity, while also leading a benchmark covering finance, legal, and other professional work.

Argon is already running internally, where Google said it has freed up hundreds of terabytes of memory at its data centers without buying extra hardware. Quantum computing researchers have used the model as well.

Rather than a broad public launch, Google is rolling out Argon in phases, starting with trusted cybersecurity partners while working with the U.S. government on pre-release safety evaluations. Gemini model product lead Tulsee Doshi said the phased approach puts a cyber-strong model in defenders' hands sooner. According to CNBC, Doshi called the model "incredibly well-rounded" at running long, multi-step tasks.

The release follows a voluntary AI safety agreement Sundar Pichai signed with President Donald Trump and other tech executives at the White House a day earlier. Google said it is scaling safeguards across four cybersecurity areas, including misuse and prompt injection, before a public release.

Wall Street reads it as a frontier catch-up

Investors had worried about delays in Google's model rollout as OpenAI and Anthropic pushed out competing releases. Against that backdrop, Alphabet's stock rose 1% in Wednesday trading and gained another 1.5% in after-hours trade.

Google priced Argon at $10 per million output tokens and $2 per million input tokens at launch, a level Evercore ISI analyst Mark Mahaney called highly competitive. He noted the pricing undercuts OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's premium models while matching Grok 4.7 on short-context input pricing, though Google said rates will double over time.

Because Argon's rollout stays limited for now, it won't drive near-term revenue. Mahaney instead framed the announcement as symbolic, writing that it reinforces the breadth of Google's AI platform and its ability to compete at the frontier.
