Invesco QQQ Trust set an all-time trading volume record on November 5, 2026, as tech stocks sold off sharply. A triple-leveraged semiconductor fund, SOXL, also hit a record.
The Invesco QQQ Trust saw approximately $80 billion in trading volume on November 5, 2026, the highest figure in its 27-year history. The fund tracks the Nasdaq-100.
Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares, known by its ticker SOXL, also hit a record with roughly $25 billion changing hands in a single session.
Nasdaq-100 drops as much as 5.9%
The volume spike came during a sharp drop in tech stocks. At its worst point in the session, the Nasdaq-100 was down as much as 5.9%.
That intraday slide erased more than $2 trillion in market capitalization. QQQ is the default vehicle for anyone who wants exposure to the index in one trade, and when big money wants out of tech quickly, or wants to hedge its tech holdings, it is usually the first door it heads for.
SOXL aims to deliver three times the daily move of a semiconductor index. A bad day for chip stocks therefore becomes a much worse day for SOXL holders.
Balchunas reads the volume as institutional fear
Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas described the session this way, according to Crypto Briefing: "Five alarm fire type selloff."
Balchunas has argued that ETF trading volume works as a gauge of institutional fear during market stress. When volume in the biggest funds explodes, it typically means large players are repositioning in a hurry.
The activity was not confined to tech-specific funds. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) and the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) also saw notable trading during the session.
Pressure had built since late October
Pressure on AI-related and semiconductor stocks had been building since late October 2026. Earlier sessions in 2026 had already produced elevated volumes in both QQQ and SOXL, and November 5 set new highs.
Leveraged ETFs can look attractive in volatile markets because they amplify moves. But the amplification cuts both ways, and daily resets mean returns over longer periods can drift away from the simple three-times math many people expect.
