Iran has told Reuters it will escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and strike the US naval blockade if Washington fails to fully implement an interim peace deal within weeks. Diplomatic talks under a June agreement have already stalled, and Tehran says it is shifting from defense to offense. Prediction markets now price a lower chance of the US ending the blockade by August 31.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters on Monday that Tehran will escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and beyond, and launch an attack if the U.S. fails to implement an interim peace deal fully within a matter of weeks. If the deadline passes and diplomacy fails, the official told Reuters, Tehran would conduct a "timely and precise" military attack to break the U.S. naval blockade on the Islamic Republic.

Diplomacy stalls, Tehran shifts to offense

Diplomatic efforts to bring Tehran and Washington back to talks under the June agreement have stalled in recent weeks. Iran's foreign minister has said the Strait of Hormuz will not reopen until the U.S. first returns to the deal, while the U.S. Treasury Secretary has warned of unprecedented economic isolation for Iran.

The official said mediators would share details of Tehran's deadline with Washington and regional states. Iranian entities must be prepared to escalate tensions in the strait and the wider region, the official said, as Tehran shifts its policy from defense to offense after losing confidence in diplomacy with Washington.

Prediction markets price a lower chance of resolution

The threat has moved prediction markets tracking the standoff. The chance of the U.S. announcing an end to the Iranian blockade by August 31, 2026 fell to 14.5%, down from 42% a week earlier.

Markets covering a longer horizon tell a different story: the December 31, 2026 contract is priced at 77% for a YES outcome, pointing to expectations that the blockade could persist well beyond the near-term deadline Iran has set.
