Israel struck an abandoned Syrian airbase near the Turkish border on August 18, opening a new flashpoint in its rivalry with Turkey over influence in Syria. Turkey called the strikes a violation of Syrian sovereignty, and the United States called them an unnecessary escalation.

Israel hit the Abu al-Duhur airbase in Syria's Idlib province with eight airstrikes on August 18. The facility hasn't operated as a military airfield since 2013, but no one was killed, and the strikes deepened a standoff between Israel and Turkey over the base's future.

Strikes target an abandoned runway

The targeted base sits roughly 70 km east of the Turkish border. Israeli officials said the strikes were meant to stop Turkey from deploying troops there, framing a potential deployment as a breach of an existing security arrangement with Syria's current administration. The strikes damaged the base's runways and storage facilities, focusing on infrastructure rather than personnel.

Turkey condemns the strikes

Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan condemned the strikes as a violation of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity. He framed the operation as part of a broader Israeli pattern of destabilizing the region. Turkey has long viewed northern Syria as a buffer zone tied to its own security, particularly regarding Kurdish militant groups near its border.

Washington calls the move unnecessary

The United States weighed in as well. According to US officials: "unnecessary escalation" is how they described the airstrikes. The US has historically given Israel wide latitude on operations it frames as defensive, so the label signals growing discomfort in Washington with the scope of Israel's campaign in Syria.

Almost 1,000 strikes in 20 months

Israel has conducted nearly 1,000 airstrikes in Syria since late 2024, primarily against threats it links to Turkey and the Syrian Democratic Forces. That pace amounts to roughly a strike every other day for about 20 months. No casualties in this round give both sides room to treat it as a signaling exercise rather than an act of war.
