Drone strikes hit Moscow region overnight

Separately, Ukraine launched roughly 600 drones at the Moscow region overnight into August 16, among the largest aerial assaults on the Russian capital's outskirts since the war began in 2022. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defenses intercepted 201 of the drones. Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed it neutralized over 800 drones nationwide during the same window.

The most visible damage hit a Wildberries distribution center in the Podolsk area south of Moscow, a facility spanning 250,000 square meters that suffered extensive fire damage. An 83-year-old man was killed after a drone struck his home, according to Russian officials. Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov called it one of the most substantial attacks the region has faced, and Russian officials threatened a retaliatory response.
