Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CBS News that frontier AI lab leaders warning about the technology's dangers have "ulterior reasons" for doing so. He argued the labs don't want new laws but relief from existing ones, echoing separate pushback from President Trump and White House tech advisor Michael Kratsios against calls for more AI regulation.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang accused leaders of frontier AI labs of being disingenuous in their warnings that, without more oversight, their products could harm humanity. He made the comments in an interview with CBS News aired on Sunday.

Huang says regulation calls mask other motives

Huang said AI leaders calling for government regulation of the industry are not actually asking for more laws — in his telling, they want to be relieved of the laws already on the books. He said he did not know exactly what those ulterior reasons are, but called scaring the public about the technology irresponsible and unnecessary.

Huang's comments echo those of President Donald Trump, who said on Saturday that new regulations aren't needed to keep the technology safe. Trump made the remarks on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, has also rejected the idea that AI companies need government intervention to ensure their models are safe. In a Fox News interview on Sunday, he said AI labs could simply stop building their products if they believe them to be dangerous.

Amodei's call for a slowdown

Last week, a group of leading AI CEOs said AI development should be slowed down until adequate risk-prevention measures are in place. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, in an essay titled "We Must Pace the Frontier," proposed a three-pronged plan meant to keep AI under the control of human engineers. One prong called on the US government to regulate frontier AI labs for antitrust reasons. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk signal-boosted Amodei's essay.

Huang, together with Trump and presidential science and tech advisor David Sacks, has emerged as a prominent voice against new regulation. In the CBS interview, he repeated his concern that a slowdown among US labs would cede ground to China in the global AI race, and that labs don't need government help to pull back if they choose to.

According to Business Insider: "We don't need more regulations. We need to apply the current regulations we have."
