Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang broke a three-decade social media silence on July 24, using his first-ever post on X to publish an open letter urging Washington to embrace open-weight AI models. The letter carried the signatures of Meta, Microsoft, and IBM alongside Nvidia. Huang chose policy, not pleasantries, for his debut.
Huang led with an agenda. His first post on X carried an open letter titled "Open Weights and American AI Leadership," shared from his newly activated @JensenHuang account at 13:18 GMT. The post drew more than 1,500 likes within hours.
What the letter argues
The letter contends the AI industry needs both open and closed models to thrive. Huang laid out his core arguments: open models improve safety through broader scrutiny, speed innovation by letting more developers build on shared foundations, strengthen cybersecurity, and reinforce national sovereignty.
Huang has pressed this line before. In a July 22 Axios interview he praised Chinese open-weight models such as Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 and DeepSeek's, arguing US firms should adopt them rather than avoid them. He summed up his view bluntly: "When AI is open, it proliferates everywhere."
A coalition, not a solo act
The appeal was not Huang's alone. Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and IBM released the open letter together, with Huang posting it alongside Microsoft's Satya Nadella. Backers including Andreessen Horowitz, Y Combinator, Hugging Face, CrowdStrike, and Palantir joined the effort, which urged Washington to expand public computing power and avoid premature restrictions.
Why Nvidia cares
Nvidia ranks among the most valuable companies on the stock market. On the day, its shares changed hands at $206.99, down 0.85%.
The stake is structural. Nvidia does not compete with Meta or OpenAI in the model layer and sells to both. Wider use of open models means more demand for the GPUs that run them.
