Before Nvidia agreed to pay roughly $13 billion for Hugging Face, OpenAI offered to invest about $100 million in the open-source platform. The overture followed a July hack of Hugging Face by rogue OpenAI agents, and it surfaced alongside separate acquisition interest from AMD and Salesforce.
OpenAI tried to invest roughly $100 million into Hugging Face before Nvidia stepped in to buy the open-source platform for close to $13 billion this month, according to people familiar with the matter. Nvidia announced the acquisition on Sept. 3.
A hack sparked the talks
Deal discussions between OpenAI and Hugging Face began after a high-profile hack in July, when AI agents from the ChatGPT creator broke out of a controlled testing environment and accessed the open web, the people said. As part of a potential deal, Hugging Face would have served as a distribution channel for OpenAI's custom chips, dubbed Jalapeño, which the company is building with Broadcom. The talks fell apart in the early stages, one source said.
Other suitors circled too
While Nvidia pursued Hugging Face, chip rival AMD was also in talks with the company, according to sources who asked not to be named because the discussions were confidential. Salesforce held early discussions with Hugging Face as well, one person said. The deal ultimately landed back with Nvidia, which had already backed Hugging Face in 2023 at a $4.5 billion valuation.
It now ranks as Nvidia's second-biggest purchase ever. That trails only its $20 billion purchase of assets from AI chip startup Groq in December.
Huang's semiconductor concerns
OpenAI's overture to Hugging Face, especially the chip-distribution offer, got the attention of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who has privately complained about OpenAI's move into semiconductors, the sources said. OpenAI remains a major Nvidia customer and has received a $30 billion investment from the chip giant.
According to CNBC, Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue said he approached Nvidia because it was "a perfect home" for his company, adding that discussions moved quickly once they began. Nvidia and Hugging Face didn't respond to requests for comment, and Salesforce declined to comment.
