The Pentagon says its current budget covers the cost of the war against Iran, yet it has already asked Congress for roughly $80 billion more. Lawmakers are pushing back on both the price tag and the legal authority behind the campaign.

The Pentagon told Congress its existing funds cover the cost of Operation Epic Fury, the US military campaign against Iran that launched around February 28. That assurance sits awkwardly next to the Pentagon's own formal request for roughly $80 billion in supplemental funding, submitted around June 2026.

Costs have repeatedly outrun estimates

The operation's price tag has climbed fast. It started at $25 billion in late April, rose to $29 billion by mid-May, then reached $37.5 billion by late July — and that last figure doesn't even include the cost of restoring what has already been spent down. The White House has gone further than the Pentagon's own number, putting forward an official supplemental request totaling $87.6 billion, of which $67.1 billion is earmarked for defense spending.

Munitions stockpiles explain part of the gap. SM-3 interceptors, Patriot missiles, THAAD rounds, and Tomahawk cruise missiles have all been significantly depleted during operations.

Lawmakers push back on cost and authority

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have raised war powers concerns, arguing the military operations lack proper congressional authorization, and war powers resolutions criticizing the campaign's legal basis have surfaced in both chambers. Congressional leaders have also complained about delayed information from the Pentagon regarding the actual costs of operations.

As a result, some lawmakers have signaled resistance to approving additional funding altogether, using the authorization question as leverage. Pentagon officials, meanwhile, have warned that without supplemental funding, the military would face cuts to training and overall readiness.

A bigger budget looms regardless

All of this plays out against the backdrop of the proposed fiscal year 2027 defense budget, which comes in at approximately $1.5 trillion — a figure separate from, and in addition to, whatever supplemental funding Congress eventually approves for the Iran conflict.
