Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Iranian missile and drone strikes on Jordan and the United Arab Emirates on August 31, 2026, calling them violations of sovereignty and international law. Iran said the strikes were retaliation for a US attack on its missile launchers in the Strait of Hormuz a day earlier.

Iran fired missiles at two Jordanian military installations, King Hussein Airbase and Al Azraq Airbase, both of which host US military assets and personnel. Jordan's armed forces reported intercepting eight incoming Iranian ballistic missiles.

The UAE faced a separate threat: a drone that allegedly approached its territorial waters. Emirati authorities intercepted the drone and denied claims that Al Minhad Air Base, a key installation south of Dubai, had been struck.

Iran frames the strikes as retaliation

Iran said the attacks answered a US airstrike against Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, carried out on August 30, 2026. The Larak Island strike targeted launch infrastructure in a waterway through which roughly a fifth of global oil supply passes.

The August 31 strikes did not emerge from nowhere. Tensions between the United States and Iran had been building through 2026, with both sides trading blows in a conflict that started earlier in the year.

Qatar's condemnation and its diplomatic balancing act

Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a formal condemnation of the strikes, urging an immediate halt to military operations and a return to diplomatic dialogue while expressing solidarity with Jordan and the UAE.

Doha hosts the largest US air base in the Middle East at Al Udeid while simultaneously keeping open communication channels with Tehran. Qatar has historically served as a back-channel intermediary between Iran and Western powers, including during nuclear negotiations, and its statement's emphasis on dialogue is consistent with that long-standing diplomatic identity.
