Qatar's Prime Minister warned that the US-Israel war on Iran threatens a generational economic hit to the Gulf, projecting an 8.6% GDP contraction for Qatar in 2026. He unveiled a new sovereign investment vehicle, the Doha Investment platform, to shield the economy from energy-sector damage tied to the conflict.
Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told the Qatar Economic Forum in New York on September 20 that the US-Israel military campaign against Iran has become an economic earthquake. According to Crypto Briefing, he called the conflict an "earthquake" whose effects reach well beyond the Middle East, warning that Gulf states face a generational economic threat if the fighting keeps escalating.
Qatar is now staring down a projected 8.6% GDP contraction in 2026, the steepest among Gulf states, with roughly $20 billion in annual revenue at risk. In the same address, Sheikh Mohammed unveiled the Doha Investment platform, a new sovereign wealth fund restructuring move designed to insulate the economy from the energy-sector damage the war has caused.
Ras Laffan output already cut
Production at the Ras Laffan LNG facilities, among the largest in the world, has been reduced by 17% because of war-related disruptions. Military escalation began in late February 2026, when attacks on Iranian forces triggered retaliatory strikes targeting Gulf energy infrastructure. Qatar is not a direct combatant, but it was caught in the blast radius regardless.
The Ras Laffan disruptions have tightened LNG supply at a moment when European and Asian buyers were counting on Qatari volumes to fill gaps left by the ongoing reconfiguration of Russian energy trade.
Doha Investment platform: the pivot
The new platform, housed under the Qatar Investment Authority, will manage a portfolio of about 45 state-owned enterprises, representing roughly one-third of QIA's total assets. Sheikh Mohammed also outlined a $60 billion domestic investment pipeline stretching over five years.
Of that total, $38.5 billion is earmarked for infrastructure projects structured through public-private partnerships, while $22.5 billion targets real estate and hospitality development. Sheikh Mohammed called for unified Gulf state action to push for a resolution between the US and Iran.
