Russian air strikes across several Ukrainian regions killed nine people and injured dozens on Saturday, officials said, as Russia reported hitting Ukrainian ports and steel plants. Ukraine's military said it struck a major Russian synthetic-rubber plant in Samara region in response.
Russian air strikes killed nine people and injured dozens across several Ukrainian regions on Saturday, damaging homes and infrastructure, officials said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russia launched nearly 500 drones against Ukrainian targets since early morning.
Civilian toll spreads across several regions
In Kramatorsk, the city council said Russian forces attacked private cars, killing three people in three separate incidents over a 90-minute period and injuring four others. The council said the vehicles were ordinary civilian cars, not military targets.
Zhytomyr Region Governor Vitaliy Bunechko said a strike on a grocery store killed two people in the town of Zvyahel, with two petrol stations and a foreign-invested enterprise also hit. Zaporizhzhia Region Governor Ivan Fedorov said two people were killed and 11 injured in attacks on Zaporizhzhia and other localities. Kryvyi Rih's military administration head Oleksandr Vilkul said two people died in overnight drone and missile attacks on the city.
Odesa Region Governor Oleh Kiper said 37 people, including an infant, were injured in a series of overnight attacks, with two people reported missing. Zelenskiy said Russia has expanded the war beyond the front line into the economy. According to Reuters: "Russia wants to kill the Ukrainian economy and break our resistance", he wrote on Telegram.
Ports, plants and a cross-border scare
The Russian Defence Ministry said its forces hit a cargo ship in Odesa it said was carrying goods for military use, after earlier striking two cargo vessels overnight in the port of Chornomorsk. Russia's military also said it hit the Zaporizhstal steel maker in Zaporizhzhia, an Interpipe Steel complex in Dnipro, and several plants in Kryvyi Rih, including the Northern Iron Ore Beneficiation Works complex. Reuters could not independently verify accounts from either side.
Ukraine's military said it struck one of Russia's largest synthetic rubber producers, the Togliattikauchuk plant in Samara region, causing a fire. Ukraine said the plant makes synthetic rubbers and fuel additives used in fuel for Russian missiles. Togliatti mayor Ilya Sukhikh said several residential buildings were damaged and one person was injured. Rostov region mayor Svetlana Kambulova said four commercial properties were set ablaze in Taganrog.
Moldovan authorities closed national airspace for nearly an hour after a drone was detected near the Ukrainian border, temporarily closing seven border crossings. Russian drones have regularly entered Moldovan airspace despite official protests, and one such incident this week delayed the departure of Zelenskiy's aircraft to Norway.
