A set of 12 wallets created in 2010 moved 600 BTC worth $47.84 million on Saturday, September 5. Arkham Intelligence tagged the original wallets as a miner, tying the coins to Bitcoin's earliest CPU-mining days.

2010 Miner Sweeps 600 BTC Across 12 Transfers

At block height 965639, 12 legacy Pay-to-Public-Key addresses began moving 600 BTC held since 2010. Both btcparser.com and Whale Alert picked up the transfers on their feeds. The coins moved into new, unflagged Pay-to-Witness-Public-Key-Hash wallets, with the sender using a "send everything" sweep on each transfer.

A 50 BTC transfer hit at block height 965645. The next block, 965646, then carried ten more transfers totaling 500 BTC. Blockchair's privacy meter scored some of the transfers 60 out of 100, or "moderate" privacy. Arkham Intelligence flags the original 12 wallets as a miner, but the destination wallets remain unknown.

Coins Mined Before Bitcoin Had a Price

The transfers were all coinbase transactions, mined between March 2 and March 5 of 2010, when network difficulty sat near 1 and miners still relied on CPUs rather than today's ASIC hardware. That places the mining before bitcoin's first-ever transaction on May 22, 2010, and before the coin held any market price at all. Bitcoin only began trading that summer, between $0.0008 and $0.08 per coin.

Such old coins moving is rare. Of the 6,427.59 vintage BTC moved last month, only two came from 2010-era wallets. Earlier on Saturday, before this sweep, September had already logged 626.74 BTC in dormant-wallet activity, a figure this move quickly dwarfed.

The last comparable event came in January, when a 2010 mega whale awoke after a year of silence to move a large batch of dormant BTC. Unlike that whale's coins, spread across mixed dates, this miner's rewards came from four consecutive days in early March 2010. Where the newly moved 600 BTC heads next remains unknown.
