Chip stocks have reversed a brutal July selloff so sharply that August 2026 is on pace to be the semiconductor sector's strongest August since 2003. The PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index has climbed more than 10% this month, with Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD, TSMC and Marvell leading the rebound ahead of a run of late-August earnings reports.

The semiconductor sector has pulled off a sharp reversal: after suffering its worst monthly decline since the 2008 financial crisis in July, the group has rallied hard enough that August 2026 is now on pace to be its strongest August since 2003.

From a 20% slide to a double-digit rally

The PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index (SOX) has climbed more than 10% as of mid-August, a sharp turnaround from what came just before it. In July, the index posted its largest monthly drop since the 2008 financial crisis, shedding more than a fifth of its value from recent highs.

Investor doubt over whether enormous capital spending on AI data centers would translate into proportional revenue growth for chipmakers was the catalyst. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) shows the scale of the swing: its year-to-date returns sit somewhere between 70% and 83% as of mid-August 2026.

Nvidia, Broadcom and AMD lead the rebound

Nvidia remains the center of the AI chip trade, with its GPUs still dominating training and inference workloads across the industry. Broadcom has carved out a growing role in custom AI accelerators and the networking chips that connect large GPU clusters, while AMD continues to chip away at Nvidia's market share in data center GPUs. TSMC manufactures the most advanced chips for nearly all of them, and Marvell Technology has emerged as a beneficiary through custom silicon and networking infrastructure for AI deployments.

Earnings could make or break the rally

Several of these companies have earnings reports scheduled for late August, which could either cement the rally or give investors a fresh reason for doubt. Nvidia's results in particular have become something of a quarterly referendum on the entire AI trade.

Beyond the swings in share prices, the underlying business keeps setting records: the global semiconductor industry reported sales of approximately $791.7 billion in 2025.
