SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics have committed a combined $950 billion in long-term memory chip supply to Nvidia and Broadcom, potentially the largest semiconductor supply commitment on record. The deals lock in high-bandwidth memory for AI data centers and land as South Korea’s president meets US tech leaders in Silicon Valley.
South Korea’s two largest chipmakers have signed long-term memory supply deals with US technology companies worth a combined $950 billion, what may be the biggest semiconductor supply commitment in history. SK Hynix will provide $750 billion worth of chips, primarily to Nvidia. Samsung Electronics contributes $200 billion to Broadcom.
What the deals cover
At the center sits high-bandwidth memory, or HBM — the specialized chips that sit inside the AI accelerators running data centers worldwide. SK Hynix has been Nvidia’s largest memory supplier, and this agreement extends and scales that existing partnership.
Samsung’s arrangement points a different direction. Broadcom has been expanding its custom chip business for hyperscale cloud customers, and locking in a dedicated memory line signals confidence in sustained demand from that segment.
Why South Korea, why now
An estimated 80-90% of Korea’s semiconductor expansion is being driven by US demand, according to Crypto Briefing. American firms need Korean memory to build AI systems, and Korean chipmakers need American buyers to justify the billions they are pouring into new fabrication capacity.
The timing is deliberate. The announcements coincide with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s visit to Silicon Valley, where talks with Nvidia, OpenAI, and other tech leaders are planned. Samsung, meanwhile, has been playing catch-up in HBM after falling behind on yield rates for its latest-generation products, and the Broadcom deal suggests it is finding footing with alternative customers.
What it signals for the sector
For anyone with exposure to semiconductors or AI, the scale marks where capital is flowing. Nearly a trillion dollars in committed purchases does not happen unless Nvidia and Broadcom expect sustained and growing demand for AI infrastructure over a multi-year horizon.
Broadcom’s side tells a parallel story. The company has been designing custom AI chips for major cloud providers, including Google and Meta. For SK Hynix and Samsung, these deals provide revenue visibility few companies in any industry can match — letting them plan capital spending and build factories with committed buyers on the other end.
