But the faster clock does not add capacity. Under SIMD-0525, the amount of computation and data allowed in each slot falls by the same proportion as the slot duration, so the network's wall-clock processing ceiling stays roughly the same even as more slots arrive each second. At the 60 million compute unit baseline, the 250ms setting corresponds to a 37.5 million compute unit limit, down from the higher limit at 300ms.
Shorter leader windows, faster confirmations
Validators remain leaders for four consecutive slots, but the quicker clock cuts each leader's control window from 1.2 seconds to one second, handing transaction-ordering power to the next validator sooner. That matters for oracle-powered markets and automated market makers, where stale prices or a few hundred milliseconds of uncertainty can affect whether a trade executes as intended. Swaps get a smaller window in which the market can move before reaching the network, which can mean fewer failed trades.
The change is the third stage of a rollout that has moved Solana from 400-millisecond slots through 350 and 300 milliseconds to the current 250. Because an epoch stays fixed at 432,000 slots, its expected duration falls from roughly 36 hours to about 30 hours.
Infrastructure adjusts, final stage still pending
Infrastructure providers now have more individual blocks to ingest and store even though total processing capacity is unchanged. Applications that estimate elapsed time by multiplying slot numbers by a fixed duration will need to adjust, and blockhashes expire sooner in real time, leaving less room for offline signing and delayed approvals.
A final reduction to 200 milliseconds would bring Solana to five targeted slots per second and shorten epochs to about 24 hours, but developers have said the network will proceed only if block-skip rates remain acceptable after the 250-millisecond stage. No mainnet date has been set for that final stage.
