Strategist Lance Roberts says the S&P 500 is so far above its long-term trend that a full reversion could pull the index from 7,000 back to roughly 2,500. He frames the risk around valuation and investment horizon rather than a near-term crash, pointing to concentrated megacap weightings in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF as the transmission mechanism.

Lance Roberts, who runs money at RIA Advisors and writes the Real Investment Report, told host Adam Taggart on Thoughtful Money that the S&P 500 has not been this stretched above its long-term logarithmic trend since 2000, and a full reversion would carry the index from 7,000 back to about 2,500. He anchored the warning to work from Ned Davis Research.

A Trend Line, Not a Price Target

Reversion to a long-term trend is not a price target with a date attached, because trend lines drift upward with earnings and inflation. As a result, the reversion level itself rises over time even if the index falls to meet it. Roberts's path to roughly 2,500 assumes the reversion happens quickly and completely, which he noted is historically the exception rather than the rule — reversions usually take years and often unfold through sideways action rather than a single decline.

The SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) closed at $764.29 on September 11, 2026, up 12.08% year to date and 16.22% over the trailing year. Roberts said "when you start up here, your forward returns aren't great every single time."

Concentration Is the Transmission Mechanism

Taggart pressed Roberts on the word "correction," noting it can mean anything from a 10% pullback to a generational drawdown. Roberts answered that even a decline of the magnitude he described would still technically qualify as a bull market correction, given how stretched valuations already are.

That stretch shows up at the top of SPY's holdings. Nvidia weighs 7.58%, Apple 6.66%, Microsoft 4.91%, and Amazon 3.64% of the fund, with Alphabet's two share classes adding further weight, so a handful of megacap technology names drive the fund's outcome. That concentration has powered SPY's ten-year return of 258.43%, and it is also the channel through which a valuation reset in a few names would show up across the whole index.

Horizon Determines the Right Response

Roberts drew a line between short-term traders, who he said can stay long while momentum and liquidity are favorable, and long-horizon investors, for whom protecting capital should be the priority. A 65-year-old drawing down a portfolio faces a decline as permanent damage to the withdrawal base — sequence-of-returns risk — while a 25-year-old contributing every payday benefits from lower prices.

The alternatives are concrete today: the 52-week Treasury bill yielded 4.23% on September 11, 2026, and the 10-year Treasury sat at 4.95% on September 10, 2026, competing directly with equity risk premiums. Roberts pointed to the Depression era, the 1960s and 1970s, and the dot-com bust extending through 2013 as prior stretches of roughly flat nominal index returns punctuated by sharp rallies and declines.

The VIX sat at 17.84 on September 10, 2026, within its normal range, meaning the market is not currently pricing meaningful stress. 24/7 Wall St rates SPY a Hold at current levels: existing positions look defensible, while new full-size purchases at these valuations warrant more caution than the last five years' returns would suggest.
