Strategy Inc. posted a Q2 2026 net loss of $8.22 billion, driven almost entirely by an unrealized fair-value hit on its Bitcoin holdings. The company responded by authorizing a program to sell up to $5 billion of that Bitcoin to fund dividends, debt, and buybacks, and its shares fell in pre-market trading on the news.

Strategy Inc., formerly known as MicroStrategy, reported a Q2 2026 net loss of $8.22 billion and, in the same release, authorized a program to sell up to $5 billion of its Bitcoin holdings. The company still holds between 843,775 and 846,000 BTC, roughly 4% of all the Bitcoin that will ever exist, making it the largest institutional holder of the asset.

An $8.32 billion paper loss

The quarterly loss works out to $24.45 per diluted share. It traces almost entirely to one line item: an $8.32 billion unrealized fair-value loss on the company's Bitcoin stash.

The operating loss for the quarter hit $8.33 billion. Following the earnings release on July 30-31, 2026, Strategy's shares dropped approximately 7% in pre-market trading.

How the $5 billion would be spent

The BTC Monetization Program, approved around June 29, 2026, authorizes up to $5 billion in Bitcoin sales across three uses. First, $1.25 billion is earmarked to build up USD reserves.

Second, approximately $1.76 billion would cover annual preferred dividends and interest payments. Third, up to $2 billion could fund share and credit repurchases.

Strategy had already sold $218.4 million worth of Bitcoin year-to-date in 2026 before the formal program was announced, suggesting the monetization approach was already underway.

Debt falls as reserves grow

Convertible debt dropped 18% to $6.7 billion, while USD reserves climbed 12% to $2.4 billion. The company has previously referenced price targets near $150,000 per Bitcoin in its forward guidance.

The liquidity question

Analysts have flagged concerns about Bitcoin liquidity given the scale of Strategy's potential sales, though whether the market can absorb billions in institutional selling without meaningful price impact remains an open question. If Bitcoin prices decline while Strategy is actively selling, the company could accelerate its timeline, creating a negative feedback loop; if prices hold or rise, the $5 billion authorization might never be fully used.
