Summit Therapeutics shares jumped 15% in extended trading after AstraZeneca agreed to invest $2.0 billion in the biopharmaceutical company. The equity deal underpins a research collaboration pairing Summit's ivonescimab with AstraZeneca's oncology pipeline, arriving as regulators weigh approval of the drug in the US.
Summit Therapeutics shares surged 15% in extended trading on Monday after AstraZeneca agreed to make a $2.0 billion strategic equity investment in the company. The capital injection backs a multi-pronged collaboration built around Summit's bispecific antibody ivonescimab and AstraZeneca's broader oncology pipeline.
Deal terms and trial tie-up
Under the equity purchase agreement, AstraZeneca will acquire convertible preferred shares at $18.36 per common share, a 10% premium over Summit's five-day volume-weighted average price. The transaction hands Summit balance-sheet flexibility to speed up its global clinical development, while giving AstraZeneca a sizable strategic stake in next-generation cancer therapies.
The two drugmakers also set up a clinical trial collaboration to test ivonescimab alongside AstraZeneca's sonesitatug vedotin, an investigational antibody-drug conjugate aimed at gastrointestinal cancers. The companies will share study costs, with AstraZeneca sponsoring the trial while both sides keep full commercial and development rights to their own assets.
Beyond that gastrointestinal focus, the partners signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to explore combining ivonescimab with other AstraZeneca cancer treatments, including its wider antibody-drug conjugate portfolio. The expansion mirrors an industry push toward combination regimens that pair anti-angiogenesis mechanisms and PD-1 blockade with targeted cytotoxic payloads to overcome tumor resistance.
FDA decision looms in November
The AstraZeneca backing lands as Summit's regulatory calendar intensifies. The FDA is reviewing Summit's Biologics License Application for ivonescimab in non-small cell lung cancer, with a target decision date of November 14, 2026.
Against that backdrop, the non-dilutive framework support and fresh capital position Summit to advance its broader pipeline of late-stage trials across colorectal, head and neck, and bladder cancers.
