SummerFi will wind down Summer.fi and sunset its user interface after seven years, pointing to a recent exploit on its Lazy Summer Protocol. The operator set no wind-down date and said nothing about the status of user funds. Aave founder Stani Kulechov said the closure shows the costs of running a secure DeFi access point.
SummerFi, a DeFi access point operating for seven years, said it will wind down Summer.fi and sunset its user interface, attributing the decision to a recent exploit on its Lazy Summer Protocol. The company announced the closure Wednesday on its official X account, thanking its users, community and supporters.
That post is the first statement from the operator tying its closure to the exploit. But SummerFi did not state an effective wind-down date or address the status of user funds in the announcement.
A $6 million drain sits behind the decision
The Defiant reported on July 6 that Summer Finance was drained of $6 million in a flash-loan exploit. SummerFi has separately characterized the incident as NAV manipulation rather than a flash-loan hack; that account has not been independently reconciled with the earlier description.
Kulechov points to the cost of running an access point
According to Stani Kulechov, founder of lending protocol Aave, who reacted to the announcement on X: “Sad to see as SummerFi has been an OG in DeFi.”
He added that the seven years had been a good run for the team and that SummerFi would be missed. Kulechov also said the closure demonstrates the stakes and costs that go into providing a high quality and secure DeFi access point.
Zapper is set to close Aug. 3
The closure follows other DeFi front-end shutdowns. Zapper, a portfolio and transaction interface, is set to close Aug. 3 after nearly seven years.
Front ends that route users to onchain protocols carry operating and security costs that the underlying smart contracts do not, a point Kulechov underscored in his post. SummerFi has not published a schedule for how or when users should move assets ahead of the UI sunset.
