Switzerland's competition regulator COMCO has opened a preliminary investigation into Alphabet's Google over the removal of a feature that let Android users pick their own default search engine. The regulator says the change leaves Google as the default for Swiss users and could limit the visibility of rivals.

Switzerland's competition regulator opened a preliminary investigation into Alphabet's Google over the removal of a feature that let people using Android devices choose their own default search engine.

COMCO said on Tuesday that the change leaves Google's search engine as the default for Swiss users when they set up their devices. The regulator warned the move could limit the visibility of rivals' offerings.

COMCO said the new practice could affect the ability of search engine providers and other digital services to compete. It also said the change deviates from what Android users get in other European countries.

A spokesperson said the company would cooperate fully with the authority to address its questions, adding that Google is aware of the initial probe.
