Major U.S. indices closed mixed Friday as Technology's leadership grew narrower and more crowded while Materials showed early signs of broader buying, according to investingLive's weekly sector-rotation assessment. Chip stocks led gains even as fund-flow data pointed to money leaving both Technology and Financials. The split leaves index investors weighing a market that looks strong on the surface but thinner underneath.

Major U.S. indices closed mixed on Friday as investors weighed a stronger-than-expected jobs report, with the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq slipping while the Russell 2000 and Nasdaq 100 gained. Beneath that split, investingLive's tracker moved Technology from Heating Up to Overcrowded on Friday, while Materials advanced from Watch to Early Accumulation on Thursday as buying began extending beyond metals and mining.

Tech funds bleed $1.4 billion as chips rally

U.S. equity funds tracking Technology lost about $1.4 billion, and Financials funds lost about $1.3 billion, in the week ended September 2, according to Reuters. Semiconductor stocks led Friday's gains regardless, as SanDisk climbed about 12% and Micron rose about 6% even though stronger jobs data pushed Treasury yields higher. Software and consumer names moved the other way: Adobe fell about 7% and Tesla dropped about 6%, while UiPath and Zscaler also traded lower.

Materials shows early signs of broader buying

Materials' shift into Early Accumulation reflects improving fund flows and relative performance that suggest interest is starting to extend past a handful of gold, copper and mining stocks. Potential drivers include infrastructure and defense spending, electricity networks, data-center construction and efforts to secure resource supplies, though these remain possible business drivers rather than a guarantee of rising profits. Whether that participation keeps broadening will decide if the sector's early read holds.

What comes next for index investors

Adobe named Anil Chakravarthy to become president and CEO effective December 1, with Shantanu Narayen moving to executive chair. UiPath beat quarterly revenue expectations and raised its annual outlook, but next-quarter guidance still pointed to slower growth. U.S. markets are closed Monday, September 7 for Labor Day, with the next regular session set for Tuesday, September 8.

Whether chip strength can pull the rest of Technology's funds back into inflows, and whether Materials' buying keeps spreading past miners, will decide which sector holds its new label next week.
