Tesla's Robotaxi service in Austin now runs 21 hours a day, leaving a three-hour overnight gap. The company has said it targets round-the-clock operations by the end of 2026, and it ties the expansion to progress in its unsupervised Full Self-Driving software.
Tesla's Robotaxi service in Austin now runs 21 hours a day. As of November 8, 2026, riders can hail a driverless Tesla anytime from 5 AM to 2 AM.
That leaves three hours when the cars are off duty, from 2 AM to 5 AM, and Tesla reserves that window for charging and maintenance. The company has said it is targeting 24/7 operations by the end of 2026.
Hours crept forward since October
The latest change is modest. Before November 8, the service opened at 6 AM and closed at 2 AM, so the update adds one hour at the start of the day.
In October 2026, the service offered only 16 hours on certain days. Tesla then extended service to midnight on October 17 and pushed it out to 2 AM on October 29 and 30.
Software holds the key to 24/7 service
Tesla has tied the expansion to improvements in its unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. During the company's Q3 2026 earnings call on October 21, Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's VP of AI Software, confirmed that continuous 24/7 operation is waiting only on final optimization of existing software capabilities.
Cumulative unsupervised Robotaxi miles were approaching 2 million by the end of Q3 2026.
New rider features and a rival's benchmark
The schedule changes arrived alongside trip sharing, improved accessibility options, rear camera feeds and Calm Mode. Austin has served as Tesla's main showcase for the program, and the service is now expanding across Texas and Florida.
Tesla is not alone in this race. Waymo already runs extensive 24/7 operations, a benchmark Tesla is still chasing.
