Tesla is voluntarily recalling about 3 million vehicles in China over door handles that can fail to open after severe crashes and deficient driver attention-monitoring systems. The company will fix the door handle issue with an over-the-air software update rather than a hardware replacement, while U.S. regulators separately look into the same design on hundreds of thousands of Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is voluntarily recalling about 3 million vehicles in China over two separate issues, according to notices published by Tesla and China's State Administration for Market Regulation that CNBC reported on August 21. The affected vehicles have door handles that can fail to open after severe crashes, plus deficient driver attention-monitoring systems.

An industry-wide door handle problem

The door handle flaw stems from a low-voltage system failure after collisions and is part of a broader industry action. It covers roughly 4.3 million vehicles across nine automakers, the largest such recall in China's history, according to Bloomberg. Tesla accounts for nearly 3 million of those 4.3 million vehicles, more than the next several automakers combined, while eight other automakers issued voluntary recalls the same day.

Regulators moved after cases of passengers becoming trapped in burning vehicles, including a fatal Xiaomi crash reported by Chinese state media, according to Reuters' reporting on the recall order.

Tesla's fix is software, not hardware

Tesla's remedy uses an over-the-air software update to automatically lower windows after a crash, plus warning labels, rather than a hardware redesign. The recall covers Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles built between 2019 and 2026. That approach means most affected owners will not need a service appointment, keeping the direct cost and logistical burden lower than recalls that require in-person repairs.

Despite the added scrutiny, the Model Y remains one of the best-selling vehicles in China, even as Tesla faces intensifying competition from BYD and Xiaomi.

U.S. scrutiny follows

The issue is not confined to China. U.S. regulators have opened preliminary investigations into roughly 179,000 Model 3 and 174,000 Model Y vehicles over the same hidden-door-handle design, according to NHTSA data cited by Yahoo Autos, and are considering new industry-wide rules on emergency door releases. As a result, Tesla faces the possibility of a second, separate U.S. recall or design requirement on top of the China action.

Insider Monkey's hedge fund database shows Tesla had 116 hedge fund holders as of Q2 2026, down from 123 in Q1 2026.
