Tesla has renamed its "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" system "Assisted Driving" in Europe after German regulators criticized the branding. The package is still sold under the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) name in the US as a $99 per month subscription.
Tesla changed the brand name of its "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)," or FSD, system in Europe to "Assisted Driving" after German regulators questioned the label. The package keeps the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) name in the US, where Tesla sells it for $99 per month to owners.
German ministry calls the FSD label misleading
On Tuesday, the German Federal Ministry of Transport, known as the BMV, called the FSD name "somewhat misleading" in a statement. The BMV said the system does not take over the entire driving task but is a driver assistance system that can support tasks such as accelerating, braking and steering, and that the driver must stay attentive at all times.
However, the rename comes as Tesla pushes for approvals across Europe. CNBC reports that EV sales have risen there this year amid soaring fuel costs caused by the war in Iran. Tesla sales have also shown signs of recovery from a slump last year.
Regulators and critics keep up the pressure
Tesla has been pressuring European regulators, especially in the Netherlands, for rapid approval. Reuters reported, per CNBC, that in some cases this pushed regulators to reduce the intensity of their safety tests and reviews.
In the US, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating FSD in reduced visibility conditions such as fog and glaring sun. It is also examining whether FSD caused drivers to commit traffic violations, some of which resulted in collisions. Separately, a California judge in December 2025 determined that Tesla engaged in deceptive marketing around Autopilot and FSD, and Tesla has countersued the California DMV in a case that is ongoing.
Missy Cummings, an engineering professor at George Mason University and a critic of Tesla, said renaming FSD is not a strong enough measure to make the systems safe for broad release in Europe. In its second-quarter earnings update, Tesla reported 1.48 million "active" FSD subscriptions but did not say how many came from free trials or other incentives.
