Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the Trump administration will sanction an unnamed "large" bank on Monday, part of Washington's ongoing economic pressure campaign against Iran. The move was originally set for Friday but was pushed back for the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday that the Trump administration will sanction a large bank next week as Washington keeps up economic pressure on Tehran over a conflict with Iran that has run more than six months. He did not name the bank or its country during an appearance on "Real America's Voice," but said the action would land on Monday.

Action delayed for September 11 anniversary

Bessent said the sanction was originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed because of ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. According to Reuters: "But we are coming for you."

Months of escalating sanctions

The United States has imposed a range of economic measures against Iran since the conflict began in February, targeting oil exports, shipping networks, weapons procurement channels, financial intermediaries, digital asset exchanges and aviation links. Last month, the administration escalated further with what Bessent called "Operation Economic Outcast," imposing sanctions on nearly 60 entities, individuals and vessels and expanding secondary sanctions on parties doing business with Iran in shipping, aviation, technology, gold and digital assets.

Trump sees no near-term end

Despite the mounting pressure, President Donald Trump predicted on Wednesday that the war will not end until after November's U.S. midterm elections.
