President Trump is hosting Rio Tinto, BHP, and Freeport-McMoRan executives at a State Department roundtable on August 7, 2026, to accelerate domestic and allied production of critical minerals. The meeting builds on a $12 billion mineral stockpile launched in February and a July executive order that tightened waiver rules for defense contractors sourcing from prohibited foreign suppliers. The goal is to cut Chinese processing capacity out of the defense, semiconductor, and electric-vehicle supply chains.

President Trump is scheduled to host a roundtable with mining executives from Rio Tinto, BHP, and Freeport-McMoRan on August 7, 2026, a State Department meeting aimed at speeding up domestic and allied mineral production. Defense systems, semiconductors, and electric vehicles all depend on a narrow list of raw materials, and a significant portion of global supply runs through China.

What the administration is trying to do

In February, Trump announced a $12 billion initiative to build a national mineral stockpile, a reserve designed to cushion the US economy and military against sudden supply disruptions — the mineral equivalent of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Then in July 2026, an executive order restricted defense contractors from obtaining waivers that let them source critical minerals from prohibited foreign suppliers. As a result, a defense firm that quietly bought materials from a sanctioned supply chain now finds that pass significantly harder to obtain.

The National Mining Association has publicly backed the push for greater resource development collaboration, giving the initiative a degree of industry buy-in before the executives even sit down.

Why China's processing grip matters

China controls a substantial share of global rare earth processing capacity, even for minerals mined elsewhere. That means a country can mine its own ore and still depend on Chinese facilities to turn it into something usable.

For the defense industry, the July order's tighter waiver rules create immediate pressure. Contractors that relied on sourcing flexibility now face a harder compliance landscape, which in turn builds demand for exactly the domestic and allied supply the administration wants to cultivate.

Three companies, one broad portfolio

The three companies confirmed at the table are not small players. Rio Tinto is one of the largest mining companies in the world by market capitalization, with operations spanning copper, iron ore, lithium, and aluminum.

Freeport-McMoRan is the dominant US-listed copper producer, and copper is foundational to electrification and weapons systems alike. BHP, the Australian giant, covers a similarly broad portfolio of strategic commodities. Yet Australia, where BHP is headquartered, is both a close US ally and one of China's largest commodity trading partners.
