President Donald Trump said his administration has discussed accumulating more Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies but has not reached a decision. He made the comment on Aug. 19 during a White House gathering of technology executives, crypto industry leaders and federal regulators. Trump said he would likely rely on recommendations from SEC Chair Paul Atkins and the rest of his policy team.

According to crypto.news: "Well, it's been talked about," Trump said when asked whether the administration planned to expand its crypto holdings. He added that he would listen if the group submitted recommendations, but he did not name a funding mechanism or give a timetable.

No purchase, funding method, or timetable announced

Trump's comments left open the possibility of further accumulation but did not change existing policy. However, any additional purchase would still need a lawful, budget-neutral method beyond the Bitcoin already held through forfeiture. Trump also said cryptocurrency had eased pressure on the dollar, though he did not provide data or explain the mechanism behind that assessment.

Existing order caps accumulation at budget neutral

Trump created the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve through a March 6, 2025 executive order, which holds Bitcoin obtained mainly through completed federal forfeiture cases. The order authorized Treasury and Commerce to design budget-neutral acquisition strategies that add no cost to taxpayers. It also created a separate digital asset stockpile for non-Bitcoin cryptocurrencies, but agencies cannot buy more assets for that stockpile without further executive or congressional action.

What happens next

SEC Chair Paul Atkins and CFTC Chair Michael Selig attended the event alongside executives from Coinbase, Ripple, Robinhood and Kraken, but the SEC does not ordinarily manage Treasury reserve assets. Any concrete plan would still need to specify the amount, acquisition method, legal authority and custody safeguards. Until Treasury, Commerce or Congress act, federal policy remains centered on forfeited Bitcoin and budget-neutral options still under review.
