The Republican-led Senate passed a short-term funding bill through December 11 to avert a government shutdown before the November midterms. The House already cleared its own version, leaving lawmakers to reconcile the two chambers' differences before funding lapses on September 30. The Senate bill also temporarily blocks a White House budget rule that would give political appointees control over grant money.

The Republican-led U.S. Senate passed a temporary measure to fund federal agencies through December 11 on Saturday, moving to head off a government shutdown weeks before the November midterm elections.

Meanwhile, the House already passed its own short-term funding measure last month, but the two chambers must still resolve their differences before President Donald Trump can sign a bill into law. Current funding runs out on September 30, less than five weeks before the November 3 congressional elections.

Democrats said the Senate's version, unlike the House's, would prevent the administration from reallocating funding to border security from other programs. It also allows funding adjustments for housing and food assistance programs.

The Senate measure would also temporarily block the White House budget office from carrying out a new rule that would give political appointees control over hundreds of billions of dollars in grant money.
