Ukraine's Special Operations Forces say they struck Russia's TANECO oil refinery in Tatarstan, more than 1,100 kilometers from the front line, damaging a key distillation unit. Tatneft has since curbed regional gasoline sales after the plant and a nearby refinery halted operations following strikes in June and July.

Ukraine's Special Operations Forces say they struck the TANECO oil refinery complex in Nizhnekamsk, in Russia's Republic of Tatarstan. The target sits more than 1,100 kilometers from the front line, one of the farthest-reaching drone strikes Kyiv has publicly claimed during the war. TANECO, operated by Russian oil giant Tatneft, processes more than 16 million tons of crude oil annually with a refining depth of up to 99%, making it one of the country's most technologically advanced fuel-processing facilities.

Strikes damage the refinery's key unit

Ukrainian forces confirmed damage to the ELOU AVT-7, a primary atmospheric distillation unit responsible for the first and most critical step in separating crude oil into usable fractions. The strikes reportedly occurred across two windows — the nights of June 11-12 and July 7-8 — and Russian sources corroborated the attacks, with local reports documenting smoke and fires near the complex.

The nearby TAIF-NK refinery, which shares infrastructure and logistics with TANECO, also experienced operational disruptions, and both facilities were forced to halt or curtail operations afterward. Tatneft then imposed limits on gasoline sales in affected regions, a practical admission that the strikes meaningfully disrupted fuel output.

A deeper reach into Russian territory

The 1,100-kilometer strike range marks a qualitative leap for Ukraine's drone campaign, which has progressively extended its reach throughout the conflict. Tatarstan, in Russia's Volga Federal District, has traditionally been considered well outside the war's geographic footprint. Yet Ukraine has systematically targeted Russian refineries and fuel depots since 2024, intensifying the campaign as drone technology improved.

TANECO itself was built in phases starting in the mid-2000s, with full operations beginning around 2010-2011, as a flagship project for Tatneft's integrated refining and petrochemical ambitions.

What it means for crude markets

Tatneft's decision to restrict gasoline sales confirms the operational impact wasn't trivial. The cumulative effect of sustained attacks on Russian refining capacity feeds into trader calculations about supply risk in global crude markets. Russia has responded by bolstering air defenses around critical energy infrastructure and dispersing some fuel storage operations.
