Ukrainian drones killed two people and struck a major fuel depot near Moscow overnight, in one of the biggest attacks of the war on the Russian capital and its surrounding region, according to Russian military bloggers. Moscow's mayor said more than 650 drones were launched at the city, with most intercepted.
Ukrainian drones killed two people and hit a fuel storage facility near Moscow overnight, Russian military bloggers said, in what they described as one of the war's largest strikes on the capital region. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Ukraine had launched more than 650 drones toward the capital, most of which were shot down.
Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the surrounding Moscow region, said 185 Ukrainian drones were destroyed or brought down over his region. He said seven people were injured and that 47 houses, four apartments and three cars were damaged.
Fuel hub reportedly struck
War blogger Yuri Podolyaka said an oil storage tank was hit at the Volodarskaya oil storage and distribution facility, the largest in the Moscow region. The site stores diesel, gasoline and jet fuel, though there was no official confirmation it had been struck. Volodarskaya is a major hub in the distribution network of state pipeline monopoly Transneft and is linked to Moscow's main oil refinery. It supplies fuel to all three of the capital's large airports.
A Ukrainian war blog, Supernova+, published video purporting to show a large blaze at the site, which Reuters said it could not immediately verify. Ukraine has increasingly targeted oil refineries, depots and export terminals in an effort to deprive Moscow of the revenue it needs to finance the war Russia began in February 2022.
Podolyaka and other Russian bloggers said, without citing evidence, that the overnight attack was also meant to hit the Moscow oil refinery in the southeast of the capital, but that Russian air defenses prevented this. The refinery, just inside the city ring road, has been hit several times, most recently on September 20, the main day of voting in Russia's parliamentary election.
Casualties and damage reported
Russia has recently intensified its own attacks on Kyiv, sending waves of missiles and drones by night and day, with its latest targets including bridges across the Dnipro river. Vorobyov said the body of a 71-year-old man was pulled from under the rubble of a house, and that a 20-year-old man was killed in a nearby village.
