Prediction markets now price a 54.2% chance that gold (XAUUSD) reaches $4,500 in August, a slight increase from previous levels. The pricing coincides with the 55th anniversary of the US dollar's exit from the gold standard, an event markets appear to read as reinforcing gold's safe-haven appeal.
The US dollar has operated without a gold backing since August 15, 1971, when President Richard Nixon suspended its direct convertibility into gold. That decision ended the Bretton Woods system, which had pegged currencies to a dollar itself convertible to gold. Since then, the dollar's value has rested on market confidence and its legal tender status rather than physical reserves.
Prediction markets tracking gold for August show rising optimism. Beyond the 54.2% probability on $4,500, participants show far less conviction on steeper moves: a $4,700 target is priced at just 7.2% YES.
This pricing suggests market participants view the dollar's decades without gold backing as a factor that can enhance the asset's attractiveness as a hedge against currency devaluation. The Federal Reserve and other central banks remain the key actors to watch: any shift in monetary policy or signal from the Federal Open Market Committee on interest rates could support or dampen the current sentiment toward gold.
