The ISM manufacturing index rose to 55.6 in July 2026, its highest level since May 2022 and a seventh straight month of expansion. Strong hiring and policy support from the Trump administration drove the gauge higher, even as factory construction spending fell earlier in the year.

US manufacturing activity expanded at its fastest pace in more than three years in July 2026. The ISM manufacturing index climbed to 55.6, the highest reading since May 2022. The gauge has now signaled growth for seven consecutive months, a turnaround for a sector that spent much of the post-pandemic era looking wobbly.

Jobs and policy tailwinds

The expansion reflects strong production demand, aggressive hiring, and policy tailwinds from the Trump administration's "America First" manufacturing agenda. The White House has pointed to more than 18,000 manufacturing jobs created in 2026 alone. It has also cited 83,000 factory construction positions added since Trump took office. Officials have leaned the incentives toward high-tech sectors, with semiconductors and pharmaceuticals getting particular attention.

Construction spending tells a different story

Manufacturing construction spending, however, declined earlier in 2026, with year-over-year drops of 6.7% in some months and as steep as 22% in others. That gap suggests companies expanded output on existing capacity before committing to new builds — a rational sequencing, not a contradiction, but one that leaves the recovery uneven across the manufacturing ecosystem.

A crypto and AI angle

The administration's push to onshore chip manufacturing intersects with the infrastructure needs of AI computing and, by extension, the crypto mining industry. More domestic fab capacity could eventually mean more accessible, potentially cheaper hardware for proof-of-work mining operations. If the construction-spending pullback reverses, as the production data suggests it eventually will, it could signal a new wave of capital deployment benefiting hardware-intensive industries including crypto mining and AI infrastructure.
