US household net worth jumped $12.8 trillion in Q2 2026 to a record $196 trillion, with equities behind roughly $10.7 trillion of that gain. The S&P 500 climbed 14.9% and the Nasdaq 21.4% over the quarter, but the top 10% of households hold 87% of the stock exposure driving the number.

American households have never held more paper wealth. The Federal Reserve's Z.1 Financial Accounts report, released September 11, 2026, shows US household net worth surged $12.8 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, reaching an all-time high of approximately $196 trillion. The prior quarter's gain was a mere $113 billion, making the jump a sharp break from trend.

Equities do the heavy lifting

Equity holdings alone jumped roughly $10.7 trillion in the quarter, while real estate contributed around $1.1 trillion. The S&P 500 climbed 14.9% during the quarter. The Nasdaq did even better, rising 21.4%, driven by a broader risk-on mood and rebounding consumer spending.

Equities now represent a record 46.6% of household financial assets and 34% of total assets, cementing the stock market's role as the main driver of American wealth.

Gains concentrated at the top

The top 10% of US households control approximately 87% of all equity holdings. The top 1% hold more than half of total household wealth, so the $12.8 trillion gain flowed overwhelmingly to a relatively small slice of the population. The ratio of net worth to disposable personal income also hit a record 828% in Q2 2026.

The record in household net worth is real, and so are the market gains that drove it. But with 87% of equities concentrated among the wealthiest 10% of households, the breadth of this prosperity is narrower than the $196 trillion headline suggests. A market that delivered $12.8 trillion in one quarter has the arithmetic to erase a significant portion of it just as quickly.
