A worker died in an accident at Codelco's Radomiro Tomic mine in northern Chile, and the state-run miner has suspended operations in the area where the accident happened. The incident follows a similar fatal accident in recent weeks at BHP's Escondida mine, also in Chile's north.
A mechanic died in an accident at Codelco's Radomiro Tomic mine, Chile's mining regulator Sernageomin said on Thursday. Codelco, the Chilean state-run miner, confirmed the death in a statement.
The company said it suspended operations in the mine's crushing and material-handling area, where the accident took place. According to preliminary information, the accident occurred at approximately 0850 AM while the worker was carrying out maintenance work in that sector, Codelco said.
The accident follows a similar incident in recent weeks, when operations at BHP's Escondida mine, also located in Chile's north, were suspended following the death of a worker there.
