XRP slipped 0.9% on September 30 as ETF inflows and futures open interest both pulled back. The move comes as President Trump floats former SEC chair Jay Clayton, who authorized the SEC's 2020 lawsuit against Ripple, as a candidate for the White House's AI czar role.
XRP fell 0.9% on September 30 to trade at $1.49, even as speculation builds that former SEC chair Jay Clayton could take over as the next AI czar. Bitcoin held near $83,000 and Ethereum traded around $2,600 amid choppy moves across the broader crypto market.
Trump weighs Clayton for AI czar role
Speaking to Axios, Trump said "Clayton is a good man. He's right here. That's a good idea," floating him for the AI czar post six months after David Sacks, who had warned that strict AI rules could slow innovation, resigned from the role. Clayton chaired the SEC until December 23, 2020, and on his last day in office he authorized the lawsuit that categorized XRP as a security — a case Ripple won in August 2025. Because Sacks also served as crypto czar, Clayton taking on the same dual role could put him back in a position to shape crypto policy decisions, especially after the CLARITY Act bill failed.
XRP ETF inflows and futures activity cool
XRP ETFs recorded zero inflows on September 29, leaving the week starting September 28 with just $3.96 million in inflows so far. That marks a slowdown from the week ending September 25, when XRP ETFs posted $75 million in inflows, the highest weekly total in four weeks.
Futures open interest also fell, dropping $270 million from $3.73 billion on September 28 to $3.46 billion. Still, its OI-weighted funding rate stays positive, suggesting more long positions than short positions as traders bet on further gains.
Price slips below key support as momentum weakens
XRP dropped below the psychological support level at $1.50 on the four-hour chart. An RSI reading of 45 suggests momentum is favoring bears, but the RSI line crossing above its signal line has created a buy signal, and if that lures buyers back into the market, XRP could target the 78.7% fib level of $1.57.
The CMF line remains negative and tipping lower, though, suggesting selling pressure still outweighs buying pressure. If sellers stay dominant on the four-hour chart, XRP could fall to the 38.2% fib level of $1.40.
