Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on U.S. President Donald Trump to organize a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, offering an energy ceasefire if Russia halts attacks on Ukraine's power grid. Prediction markets now price a slightly higher chance of a ceasefire by the end of 2026.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on U.S. President Donald Trump to organize a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying Ukraine is ready for an energy ceasefire if Russia stops attacking its energy, electricity, heating and water infrastructure. Zelenskyy raised the proposal during a meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, also discussing further U.S. air defense support and security guarantees for Kyiv.

Zelenskyy presses for Xi's help ending the war

According to CNBC, asked whether he would meet Putin directly, Zelenskyy said: "I’m ready anytime when all the sides will be ready." Zelenskyy also urged Trump to engage Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying Xi has influence on Putin and could help push both sides toward ending the war.

Trump points to Russia's oil troubles

Trump has previously urged Ukraine to stop targeting Russian oil refineries with drone strikes, arguing the attacks are hurting the world. Separately, fuel supply disruptions from the Ukraine and Iran wars have pushed U.S. diesel prices to a record high, CNBC reported. In a Truth Social post Monday, Trump said the war had left Russia without control of its diesel oil industry. Diplomatic talks had stalled as Washington shifted focus toward its war with Iran, though U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff traveled to Kyiv earlier in September for talks with Zelenskyy.

Russia's Defense Ministry, meanwhile, has said it is planning massive strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure this winter, as Kyiv braces for another season of attacks.

Prediction markets nudge up ceasefire odds

Prediction markets price a 21% likelihood of a ceasefire agreement by December 31, 2026, a slight increase from the previous day, according to Crypto Briefing. The uptick followed Zelenskyy's proposal for direct talks with Trump and Putin, though the narrow focus on energy infrastructure leaves broader territorial and political disputes unresolved.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said Trump is concentrating his efforts on promoting peace in the conflict.
