Apple added $570 billion to its market capitalization over the summer of 2026, a rally that prices in a successful foldable iPhone launch. The device debuts on September 9, just eight days into John Ternus's tenure as CEO, putting immediate pressure on Apple's new leader to deliver.

Apple's stock climbed 15% since June 25, adding $570 billion in market cap as investors bet the foldable iPhone will reignite demand. That leaves one question: can John Ternus, Apple's new chief executive, deliver on that bet.

Ternus took over on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook after a 15-year run atop the company. Cook moves to executive chairman. Ternus's first major product event follows eight days later, on September 9.

A new CEO, a new form factor, a very high bar

Ternus is 51, joined Apple in 2001, and spent years running hardware engineering before stepping into the corner office. Analysts project initial shipments between 6.5 and 10 million units, with a retail price expected between $2,300 and $2,500. Revenue projections tied to those shipment forecasts already exceed $14 billion.

Even after the summer surge, Apple's stock still sits roughly 7% below the all-time high it set on July 28.

The AI question hanging over the launch

Beyond the foldable itself, Ternus inherits a narrative problem Cook never fully resolved: the perception that Apple is running behind in artificial intelligence. The September event is therefore two launches in one — Ternus needs a compelling physical product, and he needs to show Apple's AI capabilities are evolving fast enough to justify the price.

Rising component costs add a third layer of complexity. The foldable form factor is mechanically demanding, and premium components for a device this complex do not come cheap. Ternus spent 25 years on the hardware side, so he understands the cost structure intimately.

What investors are watching

The $570 billion market cap increase reflects institutional confidence that the foldable iPhone can reignite the kind of upgrade cycle Apple has not seen since the early days of the smartphone era. If Ternus delivers, the stock has a clear path toward and potentially through its July 28 record.

Samsung has sold foldable devices for years to a loyal audience, but those launches never reshaped the broader smartphone market. Apple entering the category at scale, with its retail footprint and ecosystem pull, is a different test of whether foldables become mainstream rather than niche.
