Barrick Mining Corporation's North American unit signed a multi-year AI partnership with industrial AI firm Avathon, a deal that could generate up to $20 million a year for the technology provider. The agreement lands as Barrick prepares to list a minority stake in its North American operations by the end of 2026.
Barrick Mining Corporation's North American unit has signed a multi-year strategic partnership with Avathon, an industrial AI firm. The collaboration is capable of generating up to $20 million annually for the technology provider. The agreement, announced on September 23, 2026, centers on deploying Avathon's Autonomy Platform across Barrick's North American gold assets.
That means embedding AI into exploration, mine planning, production logistics, and supply chain operations — essentially every major step between dirt and delivery. The deal fits into a broader pre-IPO push to modernize operations ahead of a public listing.
What Avathon brings to the mines
Avathon, formerly known as SparkCognition, builds industrial AI for high-stakes physical environments, including predictive maintenance for heavy equipment, safety monitoring on active mine sites, and geological analysis. The specific targets are equipment reliability and geological intelligence, areas where unplanned downtime or a missed vein can cost tens of millions. Avathon CEO Mark Hill has emphasized that human oversight remains central to the deployment.
A modernization story ahead of the IPO
Barrick plans to complete an IPO of a minority stake in its North American operations before the end of 2026. The assets involved include Nevada Gold Mines, a joint venture with Newmont, and Pueblo Viejo in the Dominican Republic. In 2025, Barrick's North American division produced approximately 2.0 million attributable ounces of gold, the operational backbone of the broader company.
The path to that IPO got cleaner after Barrick resolved its long-running dispute with Newmont, its Nevada joint-venture partner, in a settlement that included a $1.95 billion payment. Signing a five-year AI partnership with a named industrial technology firm gives prospective shareholders a concrete signal of operational investment ahead of the listing.
A test case for mining AI contracts
The $20 million annual revenue figure, if Avathon achieves it, signals that enterprise mining contracts can be meaningful for mid-sized AI companies. Barrick's broader restructuring strategy has concentrated on Tier 1 assets — large, long-life mines in stable jurisdictions — while reducing exposure to higher-risk international ventures, and the Avathon partnership builds the operational infrastructure underneath that strategy.
