Bitcoin's mining difficulty has stayed below its October 2025 peak for 374 days, the longest such stretch on record. A projected drop of about 3.7% around Nov. 13 would push a new high further out.
Bitcoin's mining difficulty has now spent 374 days below its October 2025 all-time high, the longest such stretch in the network's history. The run beats a record set after the 2011 crash.
Difficulty peaked on Oct. 29, 2025
Economist Saifedean Ammous flagged the milestone on Saturday, writing that difficulty has been below its all-time high for more than a year. Bitcoin.com News checked the claim against Mempool.space data and found that difficulty set its record of 155.97 trillion at block 921,312 on Oct. 29, 2025. Every adjustment since has landed below that mark.
The previous record dates to 2011. Difficulty peaked on Aug. 1, 2011, and did not set a new high until July 30, 2012, a gap of 364 days. After China's 2021 mining ban, the gap ran about 253 days, from May 13, 2021, to Jan. 21, 2022.
A recovery that stalled just short
This time the drop was milder but has lasted longer. Difficulty bottomed at 124.93T in mid-June 2026 after a 10.09% cut, about 20% below the peak.
The gap had been closing, however. Difficulty rose 5.54% on Oct. 29 to 148.36T, about 4.9% below the record, and the seven-day hashrate returned to 1 ZH/s in late October after nearly eight months below that level.
But the next adjustment points the other way. Mempool.space estimates a drop of about 3.7% when the current epoch ends, roughly six days from now.
Miners face price and power pressure
Bitcoin is trading just under $76,000 at press time, which Bitcoin.com News describes as well below the levels that made last year's buildout pay off.
Publicly listed miners have also been selling coins and moving into AI. Riot Platforms sold $750 million in bitcoin and Hut 8 sold $250 million, while Keel Infrastructure dumped its entire $192 million treasury.
The report adds that a strong rebound for bitcoin could bring miners back and help move difficulty toward a new high.
